A better working life through talking

Kirjoittaja: Kenneth Johansson

In too many work communities, silence is still probably the most common way to solve problems. People remain silent about difficult matters because they do not want to insult or burden others or show their own incompetence. It seems like Finns have taken the old saying “speech is silver, silence is golden” a little too seriously. Actually, the saying is incorrect, as research shows that in working life, speech is golden. On the other hand, silence leads to problems.

An open culture of dialogue creates psychological safety at the workplace. Talking is a way of expressing feelings, giving feedback and sharing ideas for new ways and methods of working, for example. A workplace where conversation is open and safe is also more productive and human. Silence, on the other hand, turns misunderstandings into assumptions, assumptions into conflicts and conflicts into exhaustion. Unresolved conflicts are quickly reflected on both the quality of the work and the results.

So let’s make working life better and more humane by talking.

Not any kind of talking is valuable at the workplace, but its tone and content matter. When did you last hear one of the following phrases at work: “Let’s not make a fuss about this”, “This is how it is here” or “We have always done it like this”. These kinds of expressions are still common, even though they are cannot solve any problems – just postpone them.

So let’s make working life better and more humane by talking. As a bonus, we will get increased productivity, safety and well-being. In this Telma, you will find examples of the significance of working life speech for both the individual and the work community.
