“Software development requires creativity in solving problems and in finding, for the customer, the best possible solution that stands the test of time,” says Mikael von Bonsdorff, Senior Software Engineer at Monad.
The best part of the job is the feeling you get when you come up with a solution or figure out a problem. On days like that, people are satisfied with their work – they succeed with assignments, productivity improves and customers are grateful.
In most cases, you don’t think of software development as creative, but it actually is. Software engineering is modern-day craftsmanship as you are required to create something new and insightful.
The solutions that customers need from us do not necessarily exist yet. For example, you must find out how the systems communicate with each other, stand the test of time and adapt to future needs.
We have been praised for providing sustainable programs that work well now and will continue to do so in the future. The feedback we get has indicated satisfaction with how we challenge and question things, that is, we spar with the customer in relation to various options.
When creativity is allowed in the work community, results are achieved and that is why encouraging creativity is one of the key aspects of leadership. For us, this does not mean mere verbal encouragement, such as just saying “be creative”, but giving employees freedom and leaving room in projects for their creativity. Too strict limits undermine creativity.
In order to be able to use creativity, psychological safety is required in the work community. It is important to be able to express one’s ideas freely.
You must also be able to discuss issues and ideas openly and freely. Sharing opinions and challenging them is an important part of creativity in the work community. We encourage the exchange of ideas between teams, because creative solutions can emerge from the thinking of others.
Working hours must support free creative thinking so that work-life balance is possible. If you always feel that something important needs to be done at home, you cannot focus on your work. That is why we have flexible working hours and the possibility of working 80% of the regular working hours.
We do not restrict remote work, but we encourage everyone to come to the office regularly to meet the team, because face-to-face encounters create free discussion and exchange of ideas that inspire creativity.

Five years have passed since the outbreak of the pandemic. During the pandemic, remote work became significantly more common in order to control infections, but now the situation has gradually returned to normal. But what is the new normal?
People discuss the benefits of working remotely a lot, but the office also has its good sides.
The COVID-19 pandemic hit us unexpectedly and hard, and its effects were felt all over the world. In the fight against COVID-19, Finland chose isolation tactics; closing the borders between regions, closing down restaurants and cinemas and switching to remote working were ways to combat the virus and stop its progression. The remote work phenomenon
