Pääkirjoitus

In this issue Telma focuses on the metaskills needed in work life. These are general skills independent of the line of work, and are related to, for example, technology, self-management, learning, emotions or innovativeness. Metaskills can be developed at work, but also in hobbies and recreational activities. The significance of metaskills is emphasized especially in connection with changes in the work. Nearly every employed person around the world has had the chance to test their own metaskills in their changed work during the past year. Of course, in addition to these, professional expertise is always a must.

The Report of the Finnish National Board of Education, “Know-how 2035”, mentions the most important metaskills needed in work life: the ability to develop client-centred services, knowledge of the principles of sustainable development, problem-solving skills, ability to utilize digital solutions and platforms, as well as skills to evaluate information. A central metaskill is also the capacity to learn new things, and a closely related skill is unlearning of old things – possibly even more difficult for many of us.

Knowledge of the principles of sustainable development may in future be an even more important metaskill than the much talked-about ability to utilize digital solutions. The 17 goals of sustainable development presented by the United Nations also guide work life skills in this direction. These UN goals are continuously brought up also in national and international seminars.

Telma sheds light on the practical importance of work life metaskills through the experiences of people in different lines of work. The examples range from a football coach all the way to a cattle tender who shares videos on YouTube. By improving our metaskills and understanding their significance, we will master our work also in the future.
